ORIENTAL CANTEEN
2a Exhibition Rd. South Kensington. SW7 2HF
Phone: 020 7581 8831
Nearest Tube: South Kensington
Location Location Location. Man this tiny corner restaurant has it good. Walking distance from South Kensington tube and a net catcher for any Imperial College student. Wish I had this kind of place as a university student. Wished I owned a place like this.
I can’t emphasise enough how tiny this place is. You can probably fit less than 20 patrons upstairs and just a few more downstairs. Etiquette is pretty much you share your table if needed and you order fast, eat fast and then get the hell outta there. Not a joint to languish and linger in. Nor is it a place where you can stroll up in a wheelchair or a pram. It's just too tiny.
They serve a mix of Cantonese and Malaysian food. I wouldn’t say that their roasted duck rice or crispy salted pork are the crème de la crème of what London has to offer. But it’s good value (around a fiver) and good portions.
Char Kway Teow is pretty authentic (still like the Selfridges one better). The curry laksa is alright only. Not rich enough for my liking. (Don't you hate it when sometimes you can actually taste curry powder in the soup?) But a worthy contender I guess if you have a bit of a crave. Char sui (roasted pork) is good – but how can you go wrong?
They have heaps of other dishes of course. Most of them are of them are stir-fried noodles or rice with your choice of meat. But if it’s ala carte you’re after, then you can order individual dishes with rice on the side. By the way, the vegetables are hideously expensive…£7 for a small dish of gai lan (Chinese greens).
So if you’re after a cheap eat, in a hurry and not too bothered about getting your vege intake for the day…and you’re in the area…Oriental Canteen is your best bet.

Did they have Assam Laksa? After stumbling on the dish in Kuala Lumpur, I'm on a search for the best Assam Laksa in London. Best so far is the version at Nyonya in Notting Hill. Good but not good enuf!!

Assam Laksa? No they don't, Really good authentic assam laksa is hard to find in London. My friend who adores the stuff swears that the food court in Oriental City (Colindale) serves the best in London. I guess you have to find the right store though...I can see it in my head but not enough to give you accurate instructions. Will try it next time and let you know.

oh, must check this place out.haven't been there yet.

OK went to Oriental City on the weekend and tried the Assam Laksa at the shop Yong Tau Fu (or something like that) for £4 you get a massive bowl....quite good. Will do a post soon on it. The Hainnese chicken rice is divine there too. Don't go to the other Malaysian food counters...the Yong Tau Fu counter is the best for Malaysian food. Let me know what you think of the Assam Laksa there.

hi there.. thanks for sharing your passion.. i am big fan of food too... it's in our Msian blood i think.. btw, i can't seem to be able to go into your archive?
12:09 pm
Hahaha....yeah you can say that I have some Malaysian blood in me. Food food food...that's all we think about. Strange, I can get into the archive. But you shouldn't need to as all the restaurants we've written about are under all the food categories. Let me know if there are any broken links.

Re@ Curry Laksa in London.
I Saw a 2 year old post about you finding the "The One" in Convent Garden then saw teh place closed.
Whats the latest? Can you get a great Curry Laksa in London at the moment? I too am a deprived immigrant from Asia-Pac region that became hooked on Malaysian as at a young age...
12:06 pm
Alas....have not found the ultimate Curry Laksa in London. Have found some near substitutes...but nothing authentic. Will keep you all posted if I do find the magical bowl...unless someone out there can put us all out of our misery and let us in on their local secret...
Places which do an "OK" curry laska - Oriental Canteen, C & R in Chinatown, Food Garden Cafe at Selfridges, Nahar Cafe

# Nyonya

# Notting Hill

i agree that it's the best so far, and really has the best of everything so far. chicken rice is delicious, char kway teow is good, nasi lemak is just like they do at home.. the chefs are from penang so you get authenticity.
however, the price is exorbitant. 8 quid for a plate of nasi lemak!
you might wanna check it out.
also, C&R apparently has an outlet in bayswater too! just haven't gotten around to find it. =(

Hi there
I just found your blog and must say it is a good read with excellent design. The pics are what make it so good, always love seeing good food pics! I started as a blogger myself and have just started www.ifoods.tv which is a place for us foodies to swap photos, recipes and cooking videos. I just found that when I was blogging that not enough people were seeing my posts and i wanted to make a place where everybody could find all our great content easily! Check it out and let me know what you think! Make sure to keep up the good work here, have just bookmarked you! Cheers!

no more reviews for a year?

Sometimes it's the little places that are hidden gems and I guess this is a good example.
They do have an excellent location next to the tube and the college... like you said, the owner is sitting on a little goldmine there, recession or not, a business like that won't loose clientele.

This place looks absolutely amazing! Reminds me of my uni days, it's amazing how much I have changed over the years. I tend to prefer reserving a place through a website like Book a table rather than waiting. This looks like quite a busy place, as a student I would not have really cared if I had to wait or not but now as a working person, it's become a bit difficult. I am going to put this on my list to go anyways, looks like a great place to eat.
